Elliot

Louie’s overtly chipper laugh is the last thing I want to hear in the morning, but there it is, standing outside my front door. Since I’m still hungover from the transition back into days, Juliette reached him first, and now she’s standing there in the doorway, with sunlight raining across the gossamer puff of her skirt, and talking to him.

I dislike the picture.

Louie’s got his arm braced against the door frame and a Casanova smile on his lips. He’s a flirt. He always has been. He’s never particularly been one in Juliette’s direction before though, and I don’t like the idea of him seeing her differently now too.

Stepping up behind her, I grunt my greeting.

Louie’s hazel eyes flick up to meet me, and his smile gets a little bigger and a little more wild. “There’s my favorite sour puss! So, hey, when were you going to tell me the two of you started dating?”

Dully, I blink, knowing Juliette wouldn’t have said a word. Louie’s humor is riveting as ever. Before I can mumble something about how inappropriate he’s being, Juliette gasps.

Terror floods her gaze as she whirls toward me, and there’s a distinct I didn’t say I word, I swear in her eyes that absolutely anyone can read.

Even Louie.

His smile vanishes. “What. Wait. Seriously?”

“Yes,” I drawl. “I am not only dating but also shacking it up with my friend’s little sister. It started a couple days ago. I’m grouchy because we haven’t slept a wink since.”

Okay. Yes. That was a step further than I needed to go. But the blush that takes over Juliette’s face makes it a tiny bit worth it. Women shouldn’t be allowed to be as pretty as her. Men don’t stand a chance.

Louie has the audacity to chastise me in a perfectly level tone. “Whoa there. Calm down. Jules is right here.”

“She sure is,” I note and ruffle her hair with a yawn. “Come inside. You’re letting all the cool air out.” Turning, I head a little too naturally toward the kitchen, where the scent of breakfast calls me to a familiar spread with an unfamiliar third place setting. It kind of figures that Juliette knew Louie would be here early enough to have breakfast with us. He’s a hurricane.

I numbly recognize that she’s regained her composure and is inviting him over to the table before he’s plopping down in her seat and beaming at the display. “This all looks amazing, Jules! I feel so special. You shouldn’t have.”

She didn’t. Not for you. I get this every day. You’re not special.

Grinning, Juliette dishes out what appears to be a breakfast casserole—something made with nuts and oats and raisins. It looks incredible, and I glare down at it, trying to decode whether or not it’s fancier than usual or if I’m out of my mind.

“I guess the shift change is hitting you pretty hard, huh?” Louie stuffs a massive bite in his mouth, chewing merrily. His phone screams, and in a single smooth motion, he has it yanked out, turned off, and tossed onto the table, where it buzzes lamely.
